About The Role

The Game Designer and Writer role has responsibility for the writing and design development as well as the delivery of the game output for the Attune collaborative research project (Understanding mechanisms and mental health impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences to co-design preventive arts and digital interventions). The project aims to test a co-designed and bespoke game made with the aim of improving young people’s mental health and to encourage those who have experienced trauma to seek help. The post holder will have a pivotal role in designing and writing the innovative game that lies at the heart of the project. The Game Designer and Writer will be working with young people's stories to create material for the game with young people who will be active in the co-design of the game. 

The role combines specialist knowledge of game design and writing for games. The post-holder will work closely with a specialist game development team dedicated to the creation of the game over a period of two years. Collaboration will also be with a wider interdisciplinary team, including specialist mental health professionals and academics, as well as with young people who play a key role in co-designing the game. 

About You

The successful candidate for this role will have knowledge and experience of professional game design and development, be able to demonstrate a track record in design and writing for games, have experience of project management, and be able to work to deadlines. The post-holder will be able to work in an interdisciplinary and collaborative context, demonstrating practical problem solving in a mobile development context, coupled with excellent inter-personal skills.
 
We are looking to hear from candidates who have the following skills/experience:
 
  • An innovative approach to game design and the ability to come up with creative ideas.
  • Familiar with at least one major game engine (Unity preferred).
  • Technical ability in software technologies and programming/scripting languages.
  • Narrative storytelling and creative writing skill.
  • Proven development experience in game design and games writing.
  • Proven project management and planning skills.
  • Understanding of co-design principles, rapid prototyping and sprint methodologies.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work to deadlines.
